Larry Alexander, a native and lifelong resident of Oakville, LA departed this life on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at the age of 70. Son of the late Grandville Alexander and Eva Green. Beloved father of Robin Jackson and Christopher Avist. Deceased is the devoted brother of nine sisters, six brothers (two of which is deceased), four grandchildren, one great-grandchild along with a host of nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters in law, cousins, other relatives and devoted friends. Relatives and friends of the family attended the funeral services on Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Greater St. Peter Baptist Church, 182 W. Saint Peter St., Oakville, LA at 10 a.m. Visitation began at 8 a.m. Dr. Darnell Smith Sr. officiated. Daughter of the late Henry and Laura Smith Thompson. Beloved wife of Deacon Loyde Calvin Duncan Sr. Devoted mother of Bert (Jennifer) Grant, Gloria Mitchell, Clinton Thompson, Annissa Woods, Loyde Jr. (Marilyn), Jerry (Stephanie), Virgil (Belinda), Donnell (Shelly) and Kizzy Duncan and the late Craig, Stewart Craig and Ladell Duncan. Deceased also survived by 27 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters and brothers in law, other relatives and devoted friends. Jean Marks Ellzey, of Friendswood, TX, formerly of Biloxi, MS, passed away on October 25, 2016 at the age of 88. She was preceded in death by her father, Rev. Ira Marks, her mother, Grace Marks, and a sister, June McQuiston. Survivors include her loving husband, Richard Ellzey, her children, Don Ellzey and his wife Evelyn of Jacksonville, NC, Ken Ellzey and his wife Pam of Fresno, CA, Bob Ellzey and his wife Susan of Azle, TX, Max Ellzey and his wife Amy of Culver City, CA, and Sue Rives and her husband Marc of Friendswood, TX, her grandchildren, Carolyn Langley and her husband Shannon, Gail Glymph and her husband Danyel, Laura Ellzey, Kate Ellzey, Jonathan Ellzey and his wife Julie, Steven Ellzey, Charlton Ellzey, William Ellzey, Bradford Ellzey, Joy Ellzey, Grace Ellzey, Faith Ellzey, Emily Rives, and Jaxson Rives, and her great–grandchildren, Mary Grace Langley and Joshua Langley. Mrs. Ellzey graduated with a BS degree from Louisiana College in 1949 and has been married to her husband Richard for 67 years. Her legacy is her children and her Christian faith that she shared with others. She was a survivor of a tornado as a child, and Hurricanes Betsy, Camille, and Katrina as an adult. She was a former member of First Baptist Church of Biloxi and served for many years as pianist at First Baptist Church, Venice, LA. Visitation will be on Monday, October 31, 2016, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Biloxi, 1560 Popps Ferry Road, Biloxi, MS 39532. The funeral service will be at 11 am in the church sanctuary. Interment will be in Biloxi National Cemetery. Francis C. Gainey peacefully went home into the arms of Jesus on October 27, 2016 at the age of 71. Beloved husband of 50 years to Deanna Bush Gainey. Loving father of Angela Grundmeyer (Wade) and Angelle Gainey (Corey Skipper). Grandfather of Coldin, Addison and Avery. Brother of Russell, Johnny and Lloyd Gainey, the late Helen Fremin, Lily Ester Mack, Joseph Roy and Calvin Gainey. Son of the late Melodie Schaubhut Gainey and John O. Gainey. Also survived by many other loving relatives and friends. After fighting the good fight, he has taken hold of the Eternal Life to which he was called. On October 31, 2016 at 6:15 a.m., our Angel, Opal Ruth McGregor Zito, spread her wings and took flight home into eternal rest at the age of 85. Opal was born on October 26, 1931, and was raised in Teague, Texas. She earned her nursing degree in Waco, Texas in 1952. Opal was a lifelong resident of Port Sulphur, La. She is preceded in death by her parents Jessie and Ada McGregor, also Mother Coty and Sister Mary Gordon. She leaves behind her loving husband of 64 years Jack Cali Zito, Sr., her four children who adored her Jack (Cherie), Howard (Cindy), Jimmy (Melanie), Joanna (Doreen). Five generations: Grandchildren Colin, Jeryd (Monique), Jack III (Brenda), Jamie (Ryan), Jimmy (Kaci), Cade and Connor Zito. Great Grandchildren Gabrielle, Logun, Drew, Landon, Tyler, Gauge, Jordan, London, Zoe. Great- Great Grandchild Reagan Opal and many nieces and nephews. We will miss her and never forget the love she left behind in all of our hearts. Relatives and friends of the family attended the Funeral Mass at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Port Sulphur on Saturday, November 5, 2016, at 12 noon. Lydia Mae Viator Nowell

Lydia Mae Viator Nowell died peacefully in her sleep at her home on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at the age of 77. She was born August 24, 1939 in New Iberia, Louisiana, and she was a longtime resident of Belle Chasse, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, Addis Paul Viator and Agnes David Viator. She is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, James Mitchell (Mitch) Nowell, Sr., and her seven children, Rocky Paul Laliberte, Sr. (Cathy), Sheila Laliberte Derouen (Raymond, Sr.), Dwayne Mark Laliberte (Kim), Rachel Laliberte Sercovich (Terry), Brent James Laliberte (Kathy), James Mitchell (Mitch) Nowell, Jr. (Betty) and Gary Brian Nowell (Jean). She is also survived by 22 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, her sisters, Joyce Viator Thompson Sikes (George), Linda Viator Clause, Susan Viator Thibodeaux (Johnny), and her brother, Troy Jude Viator. She fought a courageous battle with lung cancer, but never lost the joy for life, and exemplified what a graceful, peaceful passing should look like. Throughout her entire illness she was determined to remain strong, and to keep a smile on her face, as she convinced the family to be prepared for her passing, when she herself was already at peace. The family would like to thank the entire staff of the Heart of Hospice for their support throughout this difficult time in our lives, and particularly her main caregiver, Ashley Smith, and her aide Lienienka Johnson, who provided for such a beautiful transition. The family also wishes to thank Dr. Robert Kessler and his staff at the West Jefferson Cancer Center for the excellent care and support that she received during the last fi ve years. Visitation was held on Friday, November 18, 2016 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Belle Chasse, Louisiana, from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. with a funeral mass beginning afterward. David Edward Martin

David Edward Martin was born June 11, 1960 and joined the presence of our Lord November 13, 2016 at the age of 56. David was the fifth child of the late Emile E. Martin III and Amanda Zahn Martin. In addition to his mother, he is survived by four brothers and one sister, Edward Zahn Martin (Cynthia), Johnette L. Martin, Jay Emile Martin, Robert Dale Martin (Mary) and Gregory Frank Martin, and six nieces and nephews; Jean Paul, Jonathan (Sandy), Elizabeth, Justen, Jeremy, and Emily. His family was the center of his world, and enjoyed every family social and outing including the company of his parents, brothers and sister, sisters-in-law, Aunts, Uncles, nieces and nephews, cousins and their spouses and children. David was a lifetime student of St. Michael’s Special School, and worked in the Joy Center from which he retired in 2014 and the life that he loved. He cherished his classmates and his work, and deeply loved his mentor Sister M. Lillian McCormack and all of his dedicated teachers. Throughout his adult life, he served as an altar boy in the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church. David was a gift to all who knew him, and was treasured as a beloved member of his community. His talent in this life was loving all who came into his path, including family, acquaintances and strangers. By the grace of God, he had two wonderful parents, a fruitful and happy life, and possessed an indomitable spirit. He had a sweet nature and gentle manner, was kind and caring of others, and loved animals, especially Gabriel, Leontine, and Sweetheart. He never uttered a discouraging word but found himself vexed and expressed anger only in understandable situations, when LSU or the Saints lost a game. Barbara Ann Turlich Jukes

Barbara Ann Turlich Jukes was born December 26, 1929, in Buras, LA at the age of 86. She was one of 4 children born to Elodie (Barrois) and Peter Turlich. She spent her childhood and early adulthood in Buras, where she met her husband, Harry Robert Jukes, Sr. Barbara’s passion was her family. She and Harry had 5-children: Robert, Carlisle (wife, Marion), Harry Jr., Rebecca (Husband, John Brennan), and Lisa. Then 7-grandchildren: Robert Jr., Kelly, Michael, Eric (Wife Nathalie), Katherine, Melissa (Husband, Paul Jackson), and Kristen (Husband, Trevor Verzwyvelt). Followed by 9 great grandchildren: Madison, Alexandra, Kayla, Sophia, Brennan, Matthew, Anna Kate, Julian, Josie, with another on the way. Barbara enjoyed serving 50+ family members barbecue on Easter and seafood gumbo at Christmas. Barbara liked to dance, especially with her brother Jerry Turlich, and son-in-law John Brennan. As a corporate spouse, living in Nigeria, Africa, she played volleyball daily. Barbara was a consummate shopper, shopping until her last days with help from her sister, Gloria Turlich Rogers. Barbara had a long hospice. The family would like to thank the sitters, who lavished Barbara with genuine care, assuring her family a peace of mind; Sister Miriam, whose weekly visits brought laughter and faith; Maria Immacolata Catholic Church who fulfilled Christ’s call to comfort those who mourn; The Homestead Assisted Living Center for providing Barbara a warm home, a place where she continued hosting family and friends and Haydel Hospice. Barbara died on November 18, 2016 in Houma, LA. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 47 years. Brothers, and two of her beloved sons, Robert and Harry. Funeral Services were on Monday, November 21, 2016 at 1 p.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, Belle Chasse, LA. There was a visitation prior to the service from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. All was welcome to join them as they say their final earthly farewells to Barbara Ann Turlich Jukes-daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a native of Lower Plaquemines Parish and a longtime resident of the lower 9th ward of New Orleans, LA. Beloved daughter of the late Walter Sr. and Mollie Russell Duncan. Wife of the late Carroll (Buster) Hills Sr. Devoted mother of Odessa Powell (the late Cleveland), Henrietta Hills, Velma Turner (Wilbert), Terry, Kenneth, Wendell, Herbert, Albert and Carroll Hills Jr. and the late Michael Hills. Sister of the Late James, Martin, Walter Jr., Hilton and Louwanna Duncan, Mabel Prout, Thelma Warren, Josephine Vaughn and Helen D. Robinson. Deceased also survived by a devoted granddaughter Claudia Hills, brother in law Herbert Taylor and sister in law Velma Hills, along with 28 other devoted grandchildren, 60 great grandchildren, 28 great great grandchildren and 1 great, great, great grandchild, a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and devoted friends. Herman Bernard “Barney” Schoenberger

Herman Bernard “Barney” Schoenberger, former Sheriff, Assessor and State Representative from Plaquemines Parish departed this life on December 1, 2016, in Buras, LA. He was 90 years old. Husband of Jo Ann Brandon for 69 years and father of Bonnie Jo S. Thomas (son-in-law, Robert L. Thomas) and grandfather of Robert S. “Schoeny” Thomas (Fiance-Brittain Brown). Son of the late Nellie B. Schoenberger and Herman A. Schoenberger. Barney was a parishioner of Our Lady of Good Harbor Catholic Church in Buras and more recently St. Ann Catholic Church in Empire. Mr. Schoenberger spent his entire life in Buras. He graduated from Buras High School in 1942 and then enrolled in Tulane University where he obtained a law degree from Tulane Law School at 20 years of age. He was the youngest law graduate from Tulane at that time. After graduating from law school Schoenberger had to wait a year to meet the minimum age requirement to be admitted to the Louisiana Bar in 1947. Schoenberger then started his own law firm in Buras. In 1959, he was elected State Representative from Plaquemines Parish, a position he held until 1967, when he was elected Assessor. In 1969, he was elected Sheriff of Plaquemines Parish and served as Sheriff for 15 years, the last two terms being elected without opposition. He served on the Legislative Committee and Board of Directors for Louisiana Sheriff’s Association. After serving as Sheriff, he served as Plaquemines Parish Administrator and Legislative consultant for a number of years. Schoenberger was always active in the Plaquemines Parish Fair and Orange Festival being one of the organizers in 1946 and prepared the first charter in 1947. He served on the Board of Directors and as Secretary-General Manager for a number of years. He was selected Orange King in 1961. During his years of public service he actively supported and handled legislation to assist in laying the Parish’s financial structure, particularly pertaining to the Royalty Road Fund and Levee District matters which accounted for about 50 percent of the parish revenues. He helped enact legislation creating the Commission Council form of government. In 1972, while serving as Sheriff, he was extremely active with other sheriffs in drafting legislation creating a fund for Supplemental Pay for Deputy Sheriff’s. During his professional life, except for the years he served as sheriff, he was very active in the practice of law. Among his colleagues and citizens of Plaquemines Parish, because of his integrity, he was often referred to as “Mr. Clean.” During his lifetime Barney was known as a great orator. He enjoyed making many speeches for the Lions Clubs, Fire Departments, graduations,and many political gatherings. Both of Barney’s grandfathers served as presidents of the  Plaquemines Parish Police Jury. His grandfather, George Schoenberger, helped to pioneer the citrus industry in Plaquemines Parish and Barney, like his father, were some of the largest citrus growers in the parish under the family’s Honey Brand Label. Schoenberger was on the Board of Directors of the Delta Bank and Trust Company for many years and also served and participated in the following organizations: Member and past Secretary & Vice-President of the 25th Judicial District Bar Association, Charter Member of the Buras Fire Department, served as President and Secretary of the Parish Baseball League; Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Past President of the Holy Name Society, Past President of the Plaquemines Lions Club, Co-Chairman of the Plaquemines District Finance Committee for the Boy Scouts, member of Elks Club, Empire Citizens Organization, Public Affairs Research Council, Chamber of Commerce, member of Peace Officers Association and member of the national Sheriff’s Association. He was a public servant extraordinaire and also one who never refused assistance to anyone. His life was truly devoted to the people of Plaquemines Parish whom he loved dearly. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Dixie Fremim D’Angelo for her caring assistance. Angelina “Puggie” Marie Jones passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, December 13, 2016 at the age of 46. Beloved daughter of Doris Morris, Geneva Williamson, and the late Marshall Jones. Loving mother of Chelsea Ruffin and Javon Jones. Grandmother of Angelina and Larry Ruffin Jr. Sister of Dawn, Sandra, Sapphire, Shannon, Kittie, Lorna, Mark, Jesse, and the late Karen Williamson, Kenneth and Tyrone Jones. Deceased also survived by a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A celebration of life honoring “Puggie” was held on Saturday, December 17, 2016 for 1 p.m. at Robinson Family Funeral Home, 9611 Highway 23, Belle Chasse, LA 70037. Consuello Christine Latham went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 11, 2016 at the age of 86. Beloved mother of Deborah Christine “Christy” Houpy Wegmann of Slidell, Walter Thomas “Tommy” Houpy of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Charles Edward “Sonny” Houpy of Jesuit Bend, David Wayne Houpy of Venice, and the late Sharon Rose Houpy Niles; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great great grandchildren. Consuello was born in Churchill, MS, and later moved to Louisiana where she started her career as a public health nurse in Port Sulphur, LA. She worked at VA Hospital in New Orleans until 1981 when she retired. Relatives and friends of the family attended the funeral services at Honaker Funeral Home, 1751 Gause Blvd. West, Slidell, on December 16, 2016 at 7 p.m. Visitation was from 4 p.m. until the service time.
