Phillip Lofton Ennis
It is with great sadness that the family of Phillip L. Ennis announces his passing after a brief illness with cancer on Saturday, July 21, 2018 at the age of 67. He was born in Port Sulphur, LA, on May 15, 1951, where he lived with his family until he moved to Freeport, TX, when he was 13. Phillip attended Freeport Jr. High and Brazosport High School, where he made many lifelong friends that he still had right up to his death. After graduation in May 1970, he attended Brazosport College for a couple of years and went to work for Brazos M&E, sweeping their floors. He worked his way up, and, some 20 years later and doing all the jobs offered along the way, he became Superintendent and Equipment Manager. He was still working there at the time of his death, and enjoyed his job and the guys who worked with him immensely. He was an employee there for a total of 45 years. During the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, he coached Pee-Wee and Little League baseball and was also involved in The Freeport Jaycees with the Blessing of the Fleet and the Freeport Fishin’ Fiesta. He served as chairman at both events the year he was president of the organization. Phillip married Gay Griffin after a five year courtship in 1975. Freeport is where the couple raised their two children, Aaron and Clay Ennis, and enjoyed 43 years of marriage every single day. Several years ago, Phillip purchased some property and a small cabin at Palestine, TX, where they delighted in fixing it up. Phillip built an extra room onto the cabin almost completely by himself, and we were all proud of him when he finished it. Also, Phillip was a true gentleman as evidenced by his passion for golf. He made many friends playing every Sunday — come rain, hail, sleet, or snow — at the Freeport Municipal Golf Course. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Gay; his children whom he loved more than anything in this world, Clay Ennis (Sara) and Aaron Ennis (Melissa); his brothers David Ennis (Karen) and Allen Ennis (Darleen); his grandchildren whom he was also proud of: Timothy, Wyatt, Kaitlyn, Cooper, Ellie and Laurel; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to family, his close friends Buster, Cathy, Matthew and Mark Lum, and Ken McGahee. The family also thanks hospice nurse Brandy Vandergrifft for her kindness and compassion. The celebration for Phillip’s life was held on Friday, July 27, 2018 at The First United Methodist Church in Freeport, where Rev. Andy Dill officiated. A private burial followed after the reception. Since Phillip’s favorite color was yellow, attendees wore various yellow items in his honor. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, donations may be made to The American Cancer Society, Heart to Heart Hospice, or The First United Methodist Church. Arrangements provided by Freeport Lakewood Funeral Home.
